“then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel stayed in Kadesh.”
What does Judges 11:17 mean?
Jephthah, Israel's military leader, is trying to move his people through neighboring lands to reach their destination, but he keeps hitting closed doors. Both Edom and Moab refuse passage, forcing Israel to camp and wait at Kadesh instead of moving forward. This moment captures something many of us know in difficult seasons: sometimes we ask politely, we do things the right way, and we still get "no" for an answer. The verse shows that obstacles and rejection aren't always signs we're doing something wrong, but sometimes just part of the journey. What matters is how we respond when our reasonable requests are refused and our path is blocked.
