Joshua 24:20
“If you forsake Yahweh, and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you evil, and consume you, after he has done you good.””
What does Joshua 24:20 mean?
Joshua is speaking to the Israelites at the end of his life, reminding them of the choice before them: stay faithful to God or turn away. He's not threatening punishment out of anger, but rather describing the natural consequences of abandoning the God who has already shown them such faithfulness and provision in the wilderness and conquest of Canaan. The "evil" Joshua describes isn't arbitrary cruelty, but the loss of God's protection and blessing. When a people turn from the one true God to worship idols, they lose their source of guidance, strength, and deliverance. Joshua wants them to understand that choosing false gods means losing the goodness they've already experienced and depend on for survival. This is spoken with urgency because Joshua knows human nature: once people feel secure, they often forget where their security came from. He's calling them to remember and choose wisely, knowing that faithfulness brings life while unfaithfulness brings emptiness and ruin.
