Joshua 24:19
“Joshua said to the people, “You can’t serve Yahweh, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God. He will not forgive your disobedience nor your sins.”
What does Joshua 24:19 mean?
Joshua is giving the Israelites a serious reality check right before they commit to following God. He's saying that serving God isn't a casual decision you can make lightly and then abandon when things get hard, because God's holiness means he takes covenant promises seriously. The word "jealous" here doesn't mean petty or insecure, but rather that God cares deeply about his relationship with his people and won't tolerate being pushed aside for other loyalties. What Joshua is really doing is being honest: if you say yes to God, you need to understand what that means. God won't simply overlook broken promises or half-hearted commitment. This isn't meant to scare people away, but to invite them to make a genuine choice with their eyes open, knowing they're entering into something sacred that calls for real faithfulness.
