Joshua 21:7
“The children of Merari according to their families had twelve cities out of the tribe of Reuben, out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zebulun.”
What does Joshua 21:7 mean?
The Levites, who served as priests and temple workers, didn't receive a large block of land like the other tribes did. Instead, God distributed them throughout Israel in smaller cities so they could teach the people and lead worship wherever they settled. The Merari clan (one of the Levite family groups) received twelve of these scattered cities from three different tribes on the east and north sides of the Jordan River. This arrangement was actually a blessing in disguise. It meant the Levites had built-in communities and support from other tribes, while those tribes benefited from having spiritual leaders nearby. It's a picture of how different people and gifts work together to hold a community together, and how faithfulness in supporting God's work (through the tithe of cities) creates blessing that spreads outward.
