“The children of Gershon had thirteen cities by lot out of the families of the tribe of Issachar, out of the tribe of Asher, out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.”
What does Joshua 21:6 mean?
After the Israelites conquered the land, the Levites (who had no territory of their own) were given specific cities scattered throughout the different tribes' regions so they could serve as priests and teachers across the whole nation. The Gershon clan, one of the Levite families, received thirteen cities spread across four different tribal areas in the northern part of the country. This arrangement meant that God's spiritual leaders were woven throughout the community, available to help people in every region practice their faith and understand God's laws.
