Joshua 21:4
“The lot came out for the families of the Kohathites. The children of Aaron the priest, who were of the Levites, had thirteen cities by lot out of the tribe of Judah, out of the tribe of the Simeonites, and out of the tribe of Benjamin.”
What does Joshua 21:4 mean?
After the Israelites conquered the land, the Levites (who served in worship and teaching) needed to be given cities to live in since they didn't receive their own territory like the other tribes. This verse describes how those cities were distributed fairly through casting lots, a practice of seeking God's guidance in decision-making. The Kohathites, one of the main Levite families, received thirteen cities spread across three different tribes, which meant they'd be scattered throughout the land in positions to serve and teach their neighbors. This arrangement also ensured that every part of Israel had spiritual leaders living among them, weaving the priestly community into the fabric of the whole nation.
