What does Joshua 21:24 mean?

This verse is part of a detailed list of towns given to the Levites, the priestly tribe who served in Israel's temples and sanctuaries. The Levites didn't receive one large territory like the other tribes, but instead were scattered throughout the land in smaller cities, which allowed them to teach God's law and lead worship across all of Israel. Aijalon and Gath Rimmon were real towns in what became the territory of Dan and Ephraim. Each of these cities came with surrounding pastureland (the "suburbs") where the Levites could raise livestock. Though this verse might seem like dry geography to us today, it reflects God's intentional care in providing for those dedicated to his service and his commitment to making his presence known throughout the entire community.
