What does Joshua 21:14 mean?
These two cities were given to the Levites, a priestly tribe who didn't receive their own territory like the other Israelites. Instead, they lived scattered throughout the land in designated towns so they could serve the people spiritually and teach God's law. Each city came with surrounding farmland (the "suburbs"), which provided the Levites with ways to support themselves while doing their sacred work. This arrangement meant that communities across Israel always had trained religious teachers nearby, weaving faith throughout the nation's daily life.
