What does Joshua 19:6 mean?

This brief verse is part of the boundary description for the tribe of Simeon's territory within Judah's land. After the initial conquest, the Israelites divided the promised land among the twelve tribes, and Simeon received several towns nestled within Judah's larger portion. Beth Lebaoth and Sharuhen were small settlements in the Negev region, and together with other named towns, they made up thirteen cities that would belong to Simeon along with their surrounding villages and farmland. These weren't grand fortifications but genuine communities where families would live, work, and worship. The careful cataloging of each town and village shows how seriously the distribution of land was taken, since land meant security, livelihood, and a place to call home.
