What does Joshua 17:6 mean?

Zelophehad's daughters had made history a generation earlier by petitioning Moses for their father's inheritance since he had no sons, and they won their case. Here we see that victory carried forward: his daughters received their portion of land alongside Manasseh's male descendants, a remarkable recognition of women's rights in an ancient culture with very different property laws. The verse also notes that Manasseh's other sons received the region of Gilead, east of the Jordan River. What emerges from this passage is a picture of how a bold appeal for justice created a lasting precedent, ensuring these women weren't forgotten or left without provision.
