Joshua 17:4

They came to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the princes, saying, “Yahweh commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” Therefore according to the commandment of Yahweh he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father.

What does Joshua 17:4 mean?

The daughters of Zelophehad are respectfully petitioning the nation's leaders to honor an earlier command from God. Their father had died without sons, and according to the laws of inheritance at that time, his land would have passed to male relatives. These women argued that God had specifically told Moses they should receive their father's inheritance, and Joshua and the priest Eleazar agreed they were right. This moment shows something beautiful about how God's people worked through difficult situations. Rather than dismissing these women or hiding behind "that's how we've always done it," the leaders listened and adjusted. The story reminds us that seeking justice and speaking up respectfully, even when the odds seem against you, can open doors. It also shows that good leaders are willing to reconsider decisions when presented with truth, honoring both God's original word and the dignity of those who ask.
