Joshua 14:4
“For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. They gave no portion to the Levites in the land, except cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their livestock and for their property.”
What does Joshua 14:4 mean?
When the Israelites divided up the promised land, the tribe of Levi (the priests and temple workers) didn't receive a large territory like the other tribes did. Instead, they were given specific cities scattered throughout the land, along with pastureland nearby for their animals. This arrangement reflected their special role: the Levites belonged to God in a unique way and were supported by offerings from all the other tribes rather than by farming their own land. The verse is simply clarifying that Joseph's descendants (split into the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh) followed this same pattern, giving the Levites cities rather than tribal territory.
