What does Joshua 14:3 mean?
After the Israelites conquered Canaan, Moses had already divided the land east of the Jordan River between two and a half tribes (Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh) who preferred to settle there. This verse explains that when it came time to distribute the remaining land west of the Jordan, the Levites—the priestly tribe set apart for religious service—received no land inheritance at all. Instead of property and crops like the other tribes, the Levites were given cities scattered throughout the other tribes' territories and were supported through tithes and offerings from the people. The arrangement reflects an understanding that the Levites' primary calling was to serve God and the community spiritually, not to build wealth through land ownership like the rest of Israel.
