“Whoever rebels against your commandment, and doesn’t listen to your words in all that you command him shall himself be put to death. Only be strong and courageous.””
What does Joshua 1:18 mean?
When Joshua takes leadership of Israel after Moses, the people make a solemn covenant to follow his direction—and they're serious about it. They're essentially saying: we understand the stakes, we'll hold each other accountable, and anyone who refuses to listen will face consequences. This wasn't unusual for ancient covenant communities, where unity and obedience to leadership were seen as survival matters. But notice how the verse ends. Right after that stark warning about rebellion comes "Only be strong and courageous"—spoken directly to Joshua. The people aren't saying this to pressure him; they're saying it to reassure him. It's as if they're telling him: you have our full support, so don't be afraid to lead. In moments of uncertainty or big responsibility, sometimes what we need most is to know that people believe in us and have our back.
