Joshua 1:17
“Just as we listened to Moses in all things, so will we listen to you. Only may Yahweh your God be with you, as he was with Moses.”
What does Joshua 1:17 mean?
The Israelites are making a solemn promise to Joshua as he steps into Moses's enormous shoes. They're saying they'll follow his leadership just as faithfully as they followed Moses, but they add a crucial condition: they're asking God to be with Joshua the way God was with Moses. It's both a commitment and a prayer, recognizing that Joshua's success depends not on his own strength but on God's presence guiding him. This reveals something true for all of us in new responsibilities—others will trust us more readily when they see that we're depending on God, not just on our own abilities.
