What does Jonah 3:4 mean?
Jonah has finally obeyed God's call to preach to Nineveh after his dramatic detour through the belly of a great fish. He enters the massive city and delivers a stark message: complete destruction is coming in forty days. There's no softening the warning, no offer of hope woven in, just a bare proclamation of judgment. What's remarkable is what happens next in the story. The people of Nineveh, notorious as enemies of Israel, actually listen and repent deeply, from the king down to the common person. This is partly why Jonah was reluctant to come here in the first place, he later complains to God that He is too merciful. Sometimes the hardest part of following God isn't delivering a difficult message, but accepting that His compassion might extend to people we think don't deserve it.
