“Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.”
What does John 9:41 mean?
Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees who have just rejected his healing of a blind man. He's pointing out a painful irony: if they truly couldn't see or understand spiritual truth, they wouldn't be held accountable for rejecting it. But they're claiming to have sight, to already know God and his ways, which means they're responsible for what they choose to do with that knowledge. When we insist we already see clearly and have nothing left to learn, we close ourselves off from growth and truth. Jesus is saying that willful blindness, the kind we choose and then deny we're choosing, is the real problem. It's not about intellectual understanding but about hardening our hearts against what might change us.
