John 9:39
“Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, that those who don’t see may see; and that those who see may become blind.””
What does John 9:39 mean?
Jesus is speaking about spiritual discernment, not physical sight. He's saying that his presence in the world reveals truth in an unexpected way: those who honestly recognize their spiritual blindness (their need, their confusion, their distance from God) become able to see and understand. But those who are confident they already see clearly, who think they have it all figured out, end up more lost than before because they refuse to look deeper. This is genuinely challenging because it means coming to Jesus sometimes requires admitting we don't have the answers we thought we did. It's an invitation to humility wrapped in a warning against pride. Throughout his ministry, Jesus kept encountering this pattern: the people most convinced of their righteousness were often the ones most resistant to what he was offering, while those at the margins, aware of their brokenness, were the ones who could actually receive healing.
