What does John 9:34 mean?

The religious leaders are responding with contempt to a formerly blind man who has just defended Jesus in front of them. Their insult—"born in sins"—reflects a common belief of the time that disability or suffering was punishment for someone's own wrongdoing or their parents' wrongdoing. When this ordinary person dares to challenge their authority or wisdom, they react not with curiosity but with cruelty, casting him out of the synagogue. What's striking is how the leaders cling to their status and certainty even when faced with a living, breathing miracle they cannot explain away. Sometimes people reject truth not because of evidence, but because accepting it would mean admitting they were wrong, and that feels unbearable to them.
