What does John 9:23 mean?
The parents of the man born blind are stepping back from answering questions about their son's healing, telling the authorities to ask him directly instead. They're doing this partly out of fear, since they'd already heard that anyone confessing Jesus as Messiah would be thrown out of the synagogue. Their response shows how real consequences can make people cautious, even when witnessing something miraculous. Yet their suggestion actually puts their son in a position to tell his own story, which becomes one of the most powerful testimonies in the Gospel, so sometimes what looks like hesitation becomes an unexpected opening for truth.
