What does John 8:49 mean?

Jesus is responding to an accusation that he's demon-possessed, a serious insult meant to discredit him. Rather than getting defensive about himself, he pivots to what actually matters: his relationship with God and how people are treating him. By saying he honors his Father while they dishonor him, he's pointing out that their rejection of him is really a rejection of God's authority and character. There's a quiet confidence here, a refusal to let their attacks pull him into defending his reputation on their terms. He's inviting them to see that honoring God means accepting his message and mission.
