What does John 8:48 mean?
Jesus' opponents are hurling the worst insults they can think of at him in this heated moment. Being called a Samaritan was deeply shameful in Jewish culture because of ancient ethnic and religious divisions between the groups, and calling someone demon-possessed was the ultimate accusation of being under evil influence. What's striking is that Jesus has just been speaking hard truths about sin and freedom, and rather than engage with his actual words, they attack his identity and character. It's a very human response when we feel threatened or challenged: sometimes we resort to name-calling instead of wrestling honestly with what someone is saying.
