John 8:43
“Why don’t you understand my speech? Because you can’t hear my word.”
What does John 8:43 mean?
Jesus is describing a spiritual barrier that goes deeper than just hearing sound waves. The people around him were physically present and could listen, but they weren't truly receiving or accepting what he was saying—their hearts and minds were closed to his message. He's pointing out that understanding isn't only a matter of intelligence or effort; it requires openness and willingness to genuinely hear what someone is saying. When we can't seem to understand something important from God or from someone we trust, it's worth asking ourselves honestly whether we're truly listening, or whether something inside us is resisting the truth we're being offered.
