What does John 7:51 mean?
Nicodemus is speaking up here, defending Jesus in a moment when the religious leaders want to dismiss him without a fair hearing. He's appealing to their own legal standard, the one written into Jewish law itself: you don't condemn someone without letting them speak for themselves and understanding the facts of their case. What makes this moment touching is that Nicodemus is risking his reputation among the other leaders to insist on basic fairness. He's not even arguing that Jesus is innocent; he's simply saying that justice requires listening first. Sometimes the most important stand we can take is just refusing to join in when others want to judge someone without knowing their story.
