But this multitude that doesn’t know the law is accursed.”

What does John 7:49 mean?

These are harsh words spoken by the Pharisees, the religious authorities of Jesus's time, and they reveal a spiritual pride that Jesus consistently challenged. The Pharisees saw themselves as the educated guardians of God's law and looked down on ordinary people who couldn't study Scripture as rigorously as they did, treating them as spiritually inferior. Jesus's entire ministry contradicted this idea, showing that closeness to God comes not from mastering religious rules but from faith, humility, and genuine care for others. If you're feeling judged by others for not knowing enough or not being "religious enough," remember that Jesus had words much harsher than these for the self-righteous, and tenderness for those simply trying to follow him with honest hearts.
