What does John 7:47 mean?
The Pharisees here are frustrated and defensive. They've just heard that the temple guards who were sent to arrest Jesus came back empty-handed, saying they were amazed by his teaching. Instead of engaging with what those guards actually experienced, the Pharisees snap at them with sarcasm, essentially asking, "You're not foolish enough to believe in him too, are you?" This moment shows what happens when people are so invested in their own position that they can't even listen to honest witnesses. The guards had no agenda either way, but the Pharisees assume anyone who's moved by Jesus must be deceived. It's a reminder of how fear and pride can make us dismiss others' genuine experiences without really hearing them out. Many of us know what it feels like to be dismissed this way, or to find ourselves doing the dismissing.
