What does John 7:44 mean?

People in the crowd wanted Jesus arrested, but something stopped them from actually doing it. Later in this passage we learn that the temple guards sent to seize him returned empty-handed, saying they'd never heard anyone speak the way he did. It's a moment that shows the tension of those days, where Jesus stirred up such conflicting reactions that people couldn't agree on what to do with him, and where his words and presence seemed to have a power that kept people from simply overpowering him. This wasn't the first or last time Jesus would face attempts to arrest him, but it reminds us that his life and death unfolded according to God's timing, not human impulse.
