John 7:39

But he said this about the Spirit, which those believing in him were to receive. For the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus wasn’t yet glorified.

What does John 7:39 mean?

Jesus is explaining that the full outpouring of God's Spirit was connected to his resurrection and ascension, not just his earthly ministry. Before his glorification, the Spirit's work was limited in scope, but after Jesus rose and returned to heaven, God would send the Spirit to live within all believers. This promise came true at Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit filled Jesus's followers and empowered them to carry on his work. For those of us today, it means the Spirit isn't something distant or reserved for special people, but a gift already available to anyone who trusts in Jesus.
