“He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory, but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.”
What does John 7:18 mean?
Jesus is drawing a sharp contrast between two different kinds of speakers. When someone speaks only to make themselves look good or gain attention, that self-centeredness inevitably leads them astray. But when a person's real aim is to honor God and point others toward him, their words and character become trustworthy and genuine. This matters because it cuts through a problem we all face: it's easy to dress up selfish motives in spiritual language. Jesus is saying that true integrity isn't about sounding right, it's about where your heart actually points. When your deepest desire is God's honor rather than your own, honesty naturally follows, because you're no longer trying to protect an image or build yourself up.
