John 6:51
“I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. Yes, the bread which I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.””
What does John 6:51 mean?
Jesus uses the image of bread, something ordinary and necessary, to describe himself and what he offers. When he says he's "living bread," he means he's the source of true, eternal life, not just physical survival. The promise "he will live forever" isn't about avoiding death, but about entering into a relationship with God that transcends death itself. The second part is harder to sit with, but it's Jesus saying that his very self, his body and sacrifice, is given for the world's restoration. Throughout history, sharing bread has meant communion and covenant, so Jesus is speaking in that deep, relational language. He's not asking for something gruesome, but inviting us into the most intimate kind of nourishment: knowing him, trusting him, letting his life become part of ours. That transformation is what sustains us, even through the hardest seasons.
