John 6:49
βYour fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.β
What does John 6:49 mean?
Jesus is reminding his listeners that even the miraculous manna their ancestors ate in the desert couldn't keep them from eventually dying. He's building toward a point: physical bread, no matter how extraordinary, only sustains the body temporarily. In the verses that follow, he'll contrast that with something deeper, a spiritual nourishment that leads to eternal life. It's a gentle but honest acknowledgment that every material provision, no matter how wonderful, has limits.
