What does John 6:42 mean?
The people in Jesus's hometown were struggling with a contradiction they couldn't resolve. They knew his earthly family, his mother Mary and his earthly father Joseph, so when Jesus claimed to have come down from heaven, it seemed impossible to them. This wasn't really about logic, though, it was about their resistance to seeing him as anything more than the carpenter's son they'd grown up with. This moment captures something very human: we often can't accept a deeper truth about someone when we've already made up our minds about who they are. The townspeople weren't asking genuine questions, they were expressing their doubt by pointing out what seemed like an obvious contradiction. What they couldn't see was that Jesus's divine origin and his human birth through Mary weren't contradictory at all, just beyond their current understanding.
