What does John 6:34 mean?

The crowd has just heard Jesus describe himself as "the bread of life," and they're asking for it literally, like they want him to provide food the way Moses provided manna in the wilderness. They're not yet understanding that he's speaking about something spiritual, something deeper than physical nourishment. It's an honest mistake, really, because Jesus just said that whoever comes to him will never hunger or thirst, and naturally people thought about their bellies first. What makes this moment tender is that Jesus doesn't scold them for misunderstanding, but instead uses their hunger as a doorway to explain what he actually means: that he's offering to satisfy the deepest longings of the human heart, the kind of hunger that food alone can never touch.
