John 6:26

Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves, and were filled.

What does John 6:26 mean?

When the crowd comes back to find Jesus after he fed five thousand people with a few loaves and fish, he gently calls out what's really going on in their hearts. They're not drawn to him because they recognized God's power at work, but because their stomachs are full and they want more of that provision. It's a tender but honest moment. Jesus isn't angry, but he's inviting them to look deeper. Physical hunger is real and legitimate, but he's asking whether they recognize something greater than a miracle worker who feeds crowds. This speaks to something many of us experience: we can be drawn toward God for the good things that happen around us, our prayers getting answered, our problems being solved, without actually seeking to know him as a person. Jesus is suggesting that's only the beginning of a real relationship with him.
