John 5:39
““You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and these are they which testify about me.”
What does John 5:39 mean?
Jesus is gently challenging people who treat Bible study like a spiritual checklist, as if reading and memorizing Scripture itself guarantees closeness to God. He's saying that the Scriptures aren't the destination, they're a signpost pointing toward him and the real relationship he offers. It's possible to know the Bible inside and out and still miss the point, the way you could study a map so carefully that you forget to actually go on the journey. The invitation here is to read Scripture not as an end in itself, but as a means to encounter Jesus and the eternal life that comes through trusting him.
