What does John 5:37 mean?

Jesus is telling the religious leaders something startling: they claim to know God intimately through Scripture and tradition, yet they've never actually encountered him directly. The Father's testimony about Jesus comes through the signs and works Jesus performs, not through some dramatic supernatural announcement they might be waiting for. There's a gentle rebuke here, suggesting that spiritual knowledge without openness to what's actually happening right in front of them is hollow. Jesus invites them to recognize God's presence and voice in what he's doing, rather than clinging to secondhand religious formulas.
