What does John 5:33 mean?

Jesus is reminding his listeners that they had sent representatives to question John the Baptist, and John's response was clear and honest about who Jesus was. John didn't claim to be the Messiah himself, but instead pointed people toward Jesus as the one they should follow. What makes this moment significant is that Jesus is using their own investigation as evidence. They went looking for answers about John, and John gave them the truth, yet they still didn't believe in Jesus. It's a gentle but pointed reminder that sometimes we already have what we need to trust God, but something in us resists taking that next step.
