What does John 5:21 mean?

Jesus is claiming here that he has the same power as God the Father: the ability to give life itself. This wasn't a small claim in his culture, where raising the dead was understood as God's exclusive divine work. He's saying that just as the Father can restore life to those who have died, the Son can do the same and can give spiritual life to anyone he chooses. For those listening, this would have been shocking, because it meant Jesus was placing himself on equal footing with God. For us today, it speaks to the deep truth that real, lasting life comes from Jesus himself, not from our own efforts or understanding.
