What does John 5:16 mean?
The religious leaders of Jesus's time had strict rules about what counted as "work" on the Sabbath, the holy day of rest. When Jesus healed people on the Sabbath, they saw it as breaking God's law, even though Jesus was actually doing good. Their response wasn't honest disagreement, though, it was anger and threats, which reveals how much their rules had become more important to them than compassion and mercy. This moment shows us something painful but real: people can become so attached to how they think things should be done that they turn against genuine goodness. Jesus's healings weren't violations but acts of love, yet they terrified those in power because they challenged the system they controlled.
