What does John 4:44 mean?

Jesus is explaining why he's heading to Galilee instead of staying in Judea, where people had seen his miracles at Passover. He's drawing on a timeless human experience: we often dismiss people we've known for a long time, assuming we already understand them completely. Familiarity can blind us to growth, change, and genuine gifts in someone. This wasn't bitterness on Jesus' part, but realism about how people work. His own neighbors in Nazareth would later reject him precisely because they thought they knew him as the carpenter's son. Sometimes the people closest to us struggle most to see us clearly, which is why Jesus sometimes moved toward people who could receive his message with fresher eyes.
