John 4:27
“At this, his disciples came. They marveled that he was speaking with a woman; yet no one said, “What are you looking for?” or, “Why do you speak with her?””
What does John 4:27 mean?
Jesus's disciples were shocked to find him talking alone with a Samaritan woman at a well, since Jewish men typically didn't engage in public conversation with women they didn't know, and certainly not with Samaritans, whom Jews considered enemies. Yet despite their surprise, they didn't challenge him or ask what he was doing, which tells us something important about their respect for him and his authority. Sometimes the most powerful moments happen not in what people say out loud, but in what they hold back, and in how they honor someone even when they don't fully understand their choices.
