“Jesus answered him, “Most certainly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can’t see God’s Kingdom.””
What does John 3:3 mean?
Jesus is saying something that sounds impossible at first, but he's using "born anew" as a picture of spiritual transformation. You can't just inherit faith or stumble into God's Kingdom by accident, he's telling Nicodemus, a respected religious teacher who came asking questions. Being "born anew" means letting go of old ways of thinking and allowing God's Spirit to remake you from the inside out. This isn't about earning your way in through hard work or following rules perfectly. It's about recognizing you need to be fundamentally changed, the way a newborn is completely new. If that sounds both challenging and hopeful to you right now, that's the right instinct. Jesus isn't being harsh; he's being honest that entering God's Kingdom requires something deeper than what we can do ourselves.
