What does John 3:20 mean?
When we're doing something we know is wrong, we naturally avoid being seen. This verse captures that very human instinct: people who are living in ways they're ashamed of tend to hide from truth and transparency because exposure feels threatening. Jesus isn't saying that honest people are perfect, but rather that those genuinely seeking to live rightly aren't afraid of the light, while those committed to wrongdoing will go to great lengths to stay hidden. There's something both convicting and hopeful here. It's convicting because it invites us to notice where we might be hiding or making excuses. But it's also hopeful because it means that stepping toward the light, toward truth and honesty about ourselves, is actually the direction of freedom. When we stop hiding and let our lives be examined, we open ourselves to healing and change.
