John 21:23
“This saying therefore went out among the brothers, that this disciple wouldn’t die. Yet Jesus didn’t say to him that he wouldn’t die, but, “If I desire that he stay until I come, what is that to you?””
What does John 21:23 mean?
A rumor had spread through the early church that John (the beloved disciple) would live forever and never experience death. Jesus had actually said something much more mysterious and less absolute: he was essentially telling Peter not to worry about John's lifespan or calling, but to focus on his own path of following Jesus. It's a gentle but firm reminder that comparing ourselves to others or speculating about their futures distracts us from what God is asking of us right now. The verse captures both how easily misunderstandings can ripple through communities of faith and how Jesus redirects our attention back to what truly matters.
