John 21:19
“Now he said this, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. When he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.””
What does John 21:19 mean?
Jesus is telling Peter how he'll eventually die—a hint that Peter's faithfulness will lead to martyrdom. Rather than being a threat, Jesus frames this as an act of glorifying God, a way of giving his life back to the one he loves. Then, immediately after revealing this hard future, Jesus simply says "Follow me," inviting Peter to trust him anyway, knowing what lies ahead. This moment captures something beautiful about discipleship: Jesus doesn't hide the cost from those who commit to him, but he also doesn't ask us to walk it alone. The call to follow remains the same whether the path is easy or costly.
