John 20:9
“For as yet they didn’t know the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.”
What does John 20:9 mean?
The disciples had heard Jesus predict his resurrection multiple times, yet when they actually found his tomb empty, they still didn't understand what had happened. John is pointing out that even though the Old Testament contains passages pointing to the Messiah's resurrection, they hadn't connected those ancient words to their present reality. Sometimes we can know something intellectually or have read it in Scripture, but real understanding takes time, especially when we're shocked or grieving. Their confusion reflects the genuine human struggle to accept something that seems impossible, even when we've been told it's coming.
