John 20:22
“When he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit!”
What does John 20:22 mean?
After his resurrection, Jesus gives his disciples something that can't be handed over like a gift or learned from a textbook, something that comes directly from him through an intimate act. By breathing on them and speaking these words, he's transferring his own Spirit into them, equipping them for the mission ahead. This echoes the very beginning of creation, when God breathed life into Adam, suggesting that what Jesus offers here is a kind of spiritual rebirth and empowerment. The disciples aren't just learning a new religion, they're being filled with God's presence to become witnesses and ambassadors of what they've just experienced.
