John 20:2
“Therefore she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have laid him!””
What does John 20:2 mean?
Mary Magdalene has just discovered the stone rolled away from Jesus's tomb, and her first instinct is to run to the disciples with the news. She doesn't yet understand the resurrection, so her immediate thought is that someone has stolen the body. Her urgent, breathless words capture the confusion and fear of that moment: everything she believed had just been destroyed on the cross, and now even his body seems to be gone. What's beautiful here is that she runs to tell others rather than trying to figure things out alone. In our own dark moments, when confusion or loss overwhelms us, there's something powerful in that impulse to reach out, to tell our trusted people what we're struggling with. Mary's panic becomes the beginning of the most transformative discovery in history, but she doesn't know that yet. She just knows something is terribly wrong, and she needs help.
