John 20:1

Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene went early, while it was still dark, to the tomb, and saw the stone taken away from the tomb.

What does John 20:1 mean?

Mary arrives at Jesus's tomb in the pre-dawn darkness, grief-stricken and devoted enough to be there as early as possible. The stone that had sealed the entrance is gone, which would have been shocking and confusing in that moment, before she understood what had happened. This detail matters because it shows her discovering the resurrection not through an announcement, but through her own eyes encountering something impossible. Her faithfulness in showing up, even in darkness and sorrow, places her at the very center of the gospel's most pivotal moment.
