What does John 20:15 mean?
Mary Magdalene is standing outside Jesus's empty tomb in the early morning darkness, overwhelmed with grief. She encounters the risen Jesus but doesn't recognize him, thinking he's the gardener tending the grounds. His gentle questions—why are you crying, who are you searching for—invite her to name her pain and what she's seeking, even though she doesn't yet know he's standing right in front of her. There's something deeply human in this moment: we sometimes search desperately for what we already have access to, or we're so focused on our loss that we can't see the hope present with us. Jesus doesn't rebuke her confusion or immediately reveal himself. Instead, he meets her where she is, asking her to voice her longing. It's a reminder that God sees our tears and our searching, and sometimes encounters us most powerfully when we're most vulnerable and honest about what we're missing.
